Frequently Asked Questions
Product Info
All R-Line products are gluten-free as our maltodextrin is manufactured from corn and not wheat.
R-Line products are manufactured in an allergen-free facility ensuring our products do not contain traces of common allergens (e.g. soy, treenuts, peanuts, egg).
Due to the high solids content R-Line gels and syrup concentrates are nearly self-preserving (think honey). However, to make sure our product is as fresh as possible we add minimal preservative to give consumers peace and mind there are no nasties.
Diluted R-Line Electrolyte and Activity drinks should be consumed within a few days. Refrigeration may increase shelf life up to a week.
Use the handy 10 mL dispensing pump (https://www.rline.co.nz/product/r-line-10ml-dispenser-pump/) to measure out single bottle servings.
We offer multiple bulk mixing containers: 10L and 20L jerry cans with taps; and 10L portable mixing bags. We have a limited number of jerry cans so they may not always be available on our website.
For massive events, we have a 1000 litre tank that can be used, and we have a system where we can hook up bulk syrup to a hose and doser system. This literally means you can have R-Line drink coming out of a hose at full pressure!
We get this question a lot and our response is not what most people expect.
It is illegal in New Zealand and Australia to sell a product labelled as an electrolyte drink that has less than 5% carbohydrates and it is practically impossible to include 5% carbohydrates without including sugars as well.
We currently provide 2 batch test products: Lemon & Lime, and Blueberry Electrolyte Drinks. Due to the additional cost of testing, these options cost a little extra and are primarily sold to commercial customers.
When R-Line was first being developed, we intended on producing a powdered product. However, like many great inventions (such as chocolate chip cookies) a liquid concentrate came about by accident.
Making prototypes of powdered products involves weighing out insanely small amounts of powdered essences and we overcame this by creating syrup dilutions that we could mix accurately. Eventually it became clear that syrups weren’t just a great idea for us, they would be easier for you to use too.
Mixing up syrups is easier and quicker than powders, the flavour is better, and frankly, no one else was doing it. R-Line had evolved and there was no looking back.
All our products (R-Line Electrolyte Drink, Activity Drink, Reload Gel and Refuel Gel) have a shelf life of 2 years.
All our R-Line Electrolyte Drink range come with colourfree options.
Apple, Lemon & Lime, Orange, Rasberry and Blueberry electrolyte drinks are also available in coloured options. At sporting events, we use coloured drinks to make sure they can be easily differentiated from water.
Apple, Lemon & Lime, Orange, Rasberry and Blueberry electrolyte drinks are also available in coloured options. At sporting events, we use coloured drinks to make sure they can be easily differentiated from water.
All R-Line Activity Drinks are coloured. This is due to workplace consumers preferring a product that is clearly differentiated from water. Colourfree Activity Drinks may also be ordered upon request if order quantity is large enough.
All our gels are uncoloured.
R-Line Activity Drink has been formulated specifically for workplace hydration. It has a different carbohydrate and electrolyte profile to R-Line Electrolyte Drink, which is designed for sports.
R-Line Electrolyte Drink is for sports, R-Line Activity Drink is for workplace hydration and activity that is lower intensity than sports.
R-Line Activity Drink has a few less carbs than R-Line Electrolyte Drink. This is because people who are working hard in hot environments are typically burning less calories than people who are exercising.
R-Line Activity Drink also has a slightly lower level of total electrolytes.
Sponsorship
We believe in supporting young and aspiring athletes battling it out against the best on the local and world stage. If you or an athlete you know may be interested in sponsorship, head over to www.rline.co.nz/athlete-sponsorship and submit an application.
We have multiple group package deals to help your team stay hydrated. We have sponsored the entire NZ NBL including 90 games across a season, as well as some small local teams.
For details, email hello@rline.co.nz and lets see if we can craft a win-win deal.
We are proud to sponsor a multitude of local, national and international sporting events across a wide variety of codes. We love supporting the community and making sporting dreams come true.
R-Line is the perfect choice when bulk hydration drinks are needed. Our 10x concentrated syrup is the easiest product to mix up, bar none.
If you are interested in working with R-Line, contact hello@rline.co.nz for more information.
Reload Gel
R-Line Reload Gel is our original gel. It contains concentrated glucose and maltodextrin in an easy to consume syrup.
Nutritionally maltodextrin and glucose are almost identical, but they differ in sweetness.
Maltodextrin is just a few molecules of glucose bonded together, and it breaks down into glucose very quickly when you drink it. We use both glucose and maltodextrin together to balance out the sweetness.
Reload Gel is fructose free.
With this style of gel, you should not consume more than 60g of carbs per hour.
We have carefully crafted this formulation to suit our 120ml refillable flask. You should consume about one flask per hour (and no more carbs than this).
If you do consume any other carbs, then take longer than 1 hour to consume to reduce the risk of a sore stomach.
Refuel Gel
R-Line Refuel Gel is our next gen gel. It contains concentrated maltodextrin as well as fructose in an easy to consume syrup. The formulation is carefully balanced so that there is a ratio of maltodextrin to fructose of 2:1
Nutritionally maltodextrin and glucose are almost identical. Maltodextrin is just a few molecules of glucose bonded together, and it breaks down into glucose very quickly when you drink it. We use maltodextrin instead of glucose in this formulation because it has less sweetness.
We add in some fructose into the formulation because guidance suggests endurance athletes should consume up to 30g fructose with 60g of glucose. The problem with this formulation is that fructose is very, very sweet and on its own, this gel would not taste great.
We have developed a Sweetness Reduction Technology (SRT) which allows us to control the sweetness of the product. We have formulated Refuel Gel to have a similar sweetness to our Reload Gel.
With this style of gel, you should not consume more than 90g of carbs per hour.
We have carefully crafted this formulation to suit our 120ml refillable flask. You should consume about one flask per 50 mins (and no more carbs than this).
If you do consume any other carbs, then take longer than 50 minutes to consume to reduce the risk of a sore stomach.
Purchasing
We accept a range of payment methods online.
Our preferred option is bank transfer as this is the option with the least fees.
Our payment gateway is Paypal. This allows you to either pay by credit card or Paypal balance if you have one. If you want to pay by credit card without logging into Paypal, we can take credit card payments over the phone.
We sometimes can offer discounts on bulk purchases or for large groups. Email hello@rline.co.nz for more information.
A lot of our coupons only work on this page https://rline.co.nz/coupon/. This isn’t always the case but is the most common issue and first thing to check.
Our coupons have a lot of settings. If yours isn’t working, check rline.co.nz/gift-certificates-and-coupons or contact flo@rline.co.nz.
Our Gift Certificates are super easy to use, they are like using cash on the website. We generally supply them as prizes for some events, and they often go to category winners.
Just pick any item you want, and when you get to the Checkout or Cart, just add the Gift Certificate code in the Have a Promotional Code section. Gift Certificates can also be split across orders. For instance, you could use half today, and half in a few months time. They don’t expire.
Delivery
Shipping is free if your order exceeds NZ$20 for residential addresses; and NZ$90 for rural addresses. All other deliveries cost $6
Free delivery may also apply to certain promotional events.
During summer, orders are dispatched daily. However, orders may only be displaced three times a week during winter.
Most North Island deliveries get to their destination within a couple of days. For the South Island, Christchurch can be as quick as a couple of days, and further south, or further afield can push delivery times up to around 5 days.
If the postal address is rural, add 2-3 days to the above estimates.
Please be mindful when placing orders in late December due to the Christmas rush. Consider allowing a few extra days to your expected delivery time.
Still haven’t received your parcel?
If the order hasn’t arrived or you have a deadline, email us at flo@rline.co.nz and we can send you your tracking number.
We have a couple of different courier systems we work with so we don’t send out tracking numbers unless they are requested, and usually, the packs are received so quickly, this system works fine. To request a tracking number, email flo@rline.co.nz and we will typically be able to get a number to you within 24 hours.
By default, our deliveries do not require signatures. If you have special instructions on where to leave the parcel, please enter this information in “Order Notes”. If you want to sign for the delivery, please specify in your order notes that you want to sign for the pack and we will try to accomodate your request.
R-Line Electrolyte Drink
The typical breakdown of ingredients is as follows.
Water, sucrose, glucose, maltodextrin, acidity regulators (citric acid, sodium citrate), sodium chloride, natural flavour, preservative (202, 211), colour.
Water is in there for obvious reasons, R-Line is a syrup and it needs water to dissolve all the ingredients.
By law, all electrolyte drinks in NZ and Australia must contain approximately between 5-10% carbohydrates which is aligned with most of the guidance out there on hydration drinks. There is some guidance that suggests 4-8% is more suitable, but that range is fairly well accepted. Out of the carbohydrates that are available for use, we needed a combination of both glucose and fructose in the product to ensure they are multiple transportable carbohydrates, and the only options to get the fructose in there is via pure fructose, which doesn’t taste great, or sucrose, which breaks down into glucose and fructose (and tastes better). That is why sucrose becomes the biggest carb.
To balance out the total carb content, sweetness and glucose to fructose ratio, we need to add both glucose (aka dextrose) and maltodextrin.
Maltodextrin is just corn starch that has been partially broken down.
Next up are the acidity regulators 330 and 331 aka citric acid and sodium citrate. The citric acid is in there for mainly for taste, but it also helps with keeping the product shelf stable. Without the citric acid in there, yeasts could grow and no one wants boozy sports drink (or do they???)
The sodium citrate balances and buffers the citric acid, as well as providing some bonus sodium without a stong salty taste.
The sodium chloride is just plain table salt. It literally comes from about 500 meters away from our factory at Dominion salt, who have a mountain of the stuff which I though was the snow when I was a kid.
Each variant has a different flavour/essence added to it. These are all natural and manufactured here in New Zealand.
We add a little preservative, but because R-Line is a 10x concentrate, we end up needing 10x less than we are allowed (its actually quite a bit less than this).
If you aren’t into colours, we do the whole range of R-Line Electrolyte Drink in colourfree options.
We add some colour to some of our flavour options. These are tartrazine, sunset orange, brilliant blue and ponceau. We have tried natural colours in the past but they fade a little too quickly and don’t really work. The colours are optimised for the 10x concentrate, so in the ready to drink product, the colours are very faint.
This is a very tough question to answer. Since the mid 90’s there have been a few guidance documents that have been released by various organisations, and they don’t always agree with each other.
We have created a calculator which incorporates some of the best ideas on how much to use, you can find it here – R-Line Calculator.
Most sports drink guidance ranges down to 4% carbs, and R-Line is around 6.5%, so watering it down a little should keep it well within this range if you feel that it suits your needs better. R-Line is very high in electrolyte content, so even when watered down a little, the electrolyte content remains high.
Mixing up R-Line a little weaker than recommended is generally OK, but we don’t recommend going any higher. This is because the electrolyte content is already high, so going higher pushes it into a range that probably doesn’t taste too good.
In NZ and Australia, the Food Standards Code defines electrolyte drinks as requiring more than 10mmol sodium, and between 5-10% carbs. R-Line Electrolyte Drink, and R-Line Activity drink both fit into this definition.
R-Line has just short of 40mmol sodium which puts us at the higher end of the range for sodium content. There is no such things as the perfect sport drink; different people respond differently. During the formulation period, the Professor that was advising us was very adamant that if we wanted a technically superior product to what is currently offered on the market, we should aim for high sodium, not low.
As far as carbs go, R-Line is quite middle of the range. Not too high, not too low, just right we think at 6.5%.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with R-Line for the past two years and it’s been a fantastic experience. It’s a high-quality product that I trust to do its job effectively. The taste is simply irresistible, and the dispenser pump has helped me get the ratios just right for my hydration and energy needs. It’s incredibly efficient and perfect for any type of gruelling activity or event. To me, R-Line embodies all the values of a truly special company and represents exceptional value. I highly recommend trying it out for yourself.

What I love most about R-line is that it’s a New Zealand-based company that truly delivers on freshness and flavour. Unlike other brands that can sometimes taste artificial, R-line’s electrolyte drinks taste natural and authentic which is so important when training for long hours

Ethan Batt

I’ve been using R-Line products for a while now and I love the way they make me feel during my time on the field. Whenever I train or play, I make sure to use their electrolyte drink concentrate to keep my hydration levels optimal. On field nutrition is both effortless and enjoyable with R-Line.

The Importance of Workplace Hydration: What You Need to Know
Why Hydration Matters
The Role of Sodium in Hydration
But it’s not just sodium that matters—it's the form and concentration in which it’s consumed. Drinks with low to moderate levels of sodium and carbohydrates are more effective at maintaining hydration compared to plain water. This is because water alone can dilute your blood plasma too quickly, reducing your thirst and leading to lower overall fluid intake, which can cause voluntary dehydration(A Review of Fluid Repla…).
Electrolyte-Carbohydrate Beverages vs. Water
Research shows that workers are more likely to stay hydrated when they consume flavored ECHO beverages compared to water. The flavor and slight sodium content make these drinks more palatable, encouraging greater fluid consumption, which is essential in preventing dehydration and maintaining productivity throughout the workday(A Review of Fluid Repla…).
Practical Tips for Workplace Hydration
2. Choose the Right Beverage: Opt for drinks that contain both sodium and carbohydrates, especially if you're working in hot conditions. These drinks help you retain fluids better and recover more quickly.
3. Monitor Your Hydration: Pay attention to your body. Symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and dark-colored urine can be signs of dehydration. Make hydration a regular part of your routine, just like any other safety measure.
4. Hydrate Before and After Work: Start hydrating before your shift begins and continue drinking fluids after your work is done to help your body recover and prepare for the next day.
In conclusion, staying properly hydrated is more than just drinking water—it's about choosing the right fluids to maintain your health, safety, and performance on the job. Make sure you’re giving your body what it needs to thrive in tough working conditions.
